Our body is continually adapting to our environment.  Each and every day, environmental insults such as ultraviolet radiation from sun, smoking, pollution, allergens, and infections create free radicals and inflammation. Free-radicals and inflammation may contribute to skin aging and immunosuppression. Antioxidants may neutralize free-radicals. However, if not, free-radicals contribute to oxidative stress.

Polypodium leucotomos (PL), an extract of a fern and found in SOTA Shade, has been studied for over 40 years and is shown to be a photo-protectant.  An oral photo-protectant that helps give total body protection regardless of application technique is a welcome addition to traditional sun protection, such as protective clothing and sunscreen application.  PL is also an immune modulator, as evidenced by improvements seen in children talking PL for atopic dermatitis.

PL was also studied among athletes to determine its effect on upper respiratory infections.  The group who received PL had a faster resolution, and fewer relapses, which they hypothesized was due to the immune-modulatory properties of PL.  Products that reduce free radicals, inflammation, and ultraviolet damage protect our bodies. With this in mind, SOTA formulas contain anti-inflammatories and antioxidants, benefitting your skin, body, and emotional well-being.
