The skin’s aging exposome is representative of both internal and external factors, as well as the body’s response to these factors. It is this response that shows the biological and clinical signs of skin aging. Environmental factors include the sun (ultraviolet, visible light, and infrared radiation), air pollution, tobacco smoke, nutrition, stress, and sleep deprivation.
Ultraviolet exposure, the leading cause of extrinsic aging, can break down the collagen and elastin in your skin. Small daily exposures over time lead to changes that are seen visibly as wrinkles, loss of elasticity (sagging), and brown spots. Excessive exposure to environmental stressors can lead to decreased immune function. CBD and Polypodium leucotomos (PL) are known antioxidants proven to help resist environmental factors that promote aging. PL reduces solar elastosis and, on a cellular level, improves elastin expression. Animal studies have shown CBD upregulates enzymes that have a protective role in UV induced oxidative stress.
