What is the difference between Water-Soluble and Oil-Soluble CBD?

Updated: Oct 3, 2019

Water-Soluble vs. Oil-Soluble CBD : What You Need To Know

First, we all know that oil and water don’t mix. This is an important issue when it comes to using CBD oil and other oil-based plant extracts because the majority of the health and wellness products we use today are not typically oil-based. What most don’t know is that CBD, in its natural form, as it is extracted from the hemp plant, is in the form of an oil.

When we think about maximizing the benefits of CBD oil, it all comes down something known as bioavailability. This is how much of any given substance your body is able to absorb. When you swallow any oil-based substance such as CBD oil, there is one bodily process that is responsible for effecting the absorption of CBD oil in the stomach, which is called the first pass metabolism.

First Pass Metabolism

First-pass metabolism is a process that involves the liver where the breakdown of drugs and other plant based extracts are broken down and reduced in size to be able to enter your blood stream to gain maximum benefits.

This breakdown means a decrease in bioavailability (absorption), and is a relatively common problem that affects a number of very common compounds including, morphine, lidocaine, nitroglycerin, including hemp and other cannabis based cannabinoids.

It is important to note, however, that first-pass metabolism only affects the amount of CBD your body will absorb when the CBD is in its natural oil form and it is taken orally.

The good news is that there are some creative chemistry techniques used to get around the first pass metabolism.

What’s the problem?

I know you might be thinking, “What about all the CBD capsules and drinks out there? Am I not actually getting the full dose of CBD that is advertised?” The answer to those questions all depends on the delivery method used to create the CBD product.

As noted above, the first pass effect greatly decreases the bioavailability of CBD oil when swallowed. So when looking at products such as CBD capsules, unfortunately, nearly all CBD-oil capsules that you see on the market have very poor absorption rates because these are all oil based.

Luckily, really smart scientists have already addressed this problem and have better solution.

A newly developed chemistry technique allows us to make CBD (including new common drugs) more water-soluble. This is super important because almost 40% of all new drug compounds do not dissolve in water without this technology and have the same oral absorption issues as CBD in its natural oil form.

Enter Water-Soluble CBD…

One of the best ways to overcome the first-pass effect is to convert the CBD oil extract into a water-soluble (dissolves in water) form. Considering humans are 50-60% water, this naturally makes sense that our body will be more likely to receiving a water-soluble solution.

Why is this important? SOTA CBD uses a process that is called Nano-emulsification. This process converts the CBD oil to a water-soluble solution using where the CBD oil is broken down into tiny, micro-sized particles and then put into a water-based solution to ensure they remain stable and do not separate (similar to if you were to mix oil and vinegar). The end result of this process is water-soluble, micro-emulsified, CBD hemp oil extract that is off-white in appearance and can easily dissolves in water.

Why should you care?

Converting CBD oil into a water-soluble solution greatly increases the ways in which it can be consumed. Water-soluble CBD opens up a world of possibilities. Not only does it allow us to effectively use tinctures as a precise CBD delivery method, but it also lets us put CBD in any drink or food products, such as smoothies, coffee, and even pasta sauce.

This is why SOTA CBD feels that offering a water-soluble solution to its customers makes the most sense for widespread adoption and use in our everyday lives in order to maximize benefits of taking CBD.

The next time you look to purchase your CBD products, read the label and determine if it is an oil or water-soluble CBD product. If it is not labeled as a water-soluble product, how much will you actually be absorbing? The answer is not much at all.

Activating our incredibly complex and important endocannabinoid system with CBD supplementation is something that nearly everyone can benefit from. It’s time to start maximizing your CBD benefits and firing that system up with water-soluble CBD from companies like SOTA CBD, who are on the forefront of science and technology to allow you to maximize your cost to benefit ratio with taking CBD!
